This weekend the largest popular culture event in Europe descended on London, with fans of comic books, movies, toys, computer games and genre TV flocking to the ExCeL Centre, many dressed as their favourite characters. New Worlds was there to chronicle the event - expect a full review in due course - to mingle with the fans and stars at the packed event and we can report that despite taking place in austerity times the overall atmosphere of the event was one of resounding success, with many stallholders reporting their best ever Expo takings.
Likewise, despite some bitterly cold winds and rain the fans were jubilant and from the cosplayers dancing Gangnam Style to the cheery nerds carrying "Free Hugs" signs (one enterprising fellow advertised "Awesome Hugs" instead) the party spirit was alive and well, friendly and welcoming. Even if you don't know your yaoi from your yiffing (and it's probably better if you don't) it's hard to remain just a tiny bit cynical in the face of such relentless enthusiasm. Look out for the full review on these pages in the next few days.
